Main Course: Web and Language - ウェブと言葉

For June we'll be looking at interesting technologies at the intersection of web & language, such as natural language processing. The main course presentations will give a taste of the challenges and opportunities in working with natural language on the web.

Introduction

• The application of NLP to 'goo' services - gooサービスへの自然言語処理の適用

  I'll introduce two services on our portal site 'goo', called 'Blog Sentiment Analysis' and 'Blog Report Card', and explain several NLP techniques constituting them. I'd like to share some ideas on applying NLP to real services.
  gooの実サービスであるブログ評判分析と、ブログ通信簿を紹介し、この中で、実際にどのような自然言語処理を用いているのかを解説する。また、自然言語処理を実サービスに導入する際に起こる課題やその解決方針について述べる。
  
• Ubiquity: Command the Web with Language - Ubiquity: 言葉で操作する Web

  Ubiquity is an experimental interface for the browser, allowing users to control the web with language. The presentation will include demos for end users and developers to experience the power and extensibility of the Ubiquity platform. Particular focus will be placed on the difficulties of working with natural language as well as Ubiquity's natural language processing and localization efforts.

• An online synthetic speech system, Voice Delivery System - Web合成音声配信システム【vds(ボイス・デリバリ・システム)】のご紹介

  Knowledge Creation will demo their Voice Delivery System, a Web API for synthetic speech generation, and briefly introduce the system's merits and applications.
  vdsはウェブページに音声読み上げ機能を実装するためのWebAPIです。(WebAPI とは、Webで提供されたアプリケーション・プログラム・インターフェース。) 音声は当社のサーバで自動的に生成され、ウェブページの閲覧者に届けられます。
  vds（Voice Delivery System）」は、音声読み上げソフトを持たなくとも、ウェブサイトを閲覧する際、クリックするだけで、指定した部分のデータが専用サーバに送信され、音声に変換されてストリーミングにより配信されるもので、視覚障害者はもとより、日本語に不慣れな外国人や小さな子供など文字では情報伝達が困難な人々にも活用が可能です。
  
• Social Media and Translation: Bridging the Two Solitudes - ソーシャルメディアと翻訳 そのギャップを越えて

  Over the past few years, the web has exploded with an array of new social media tools, platform and services. Now it's also exploding with a world of languages asking to be translated, but you'd be hard pressed to find out much about it. Why is it that the multilingual web gets so little attention? Is there potential in community-based approaches to translation? Using examples from my experience at the blogging project Global Voices, I'll argue that translation and social media are a natural match, and that community translation holds the key to reaching new linguistic audiences for certain types of content.
  ここ数年、ウェブの世界には新しいソーシャルメディア用のツール、プラットフォーム、サービスが次々と登場してきた。そして今、翻訳の需要が高まっているものの、それについてはほとんど情報がない。なぜ多言語ウェブには、それほど注目が集まらないのか。コミュニティーベースの翻訳の可能性は。ここでは、ブログ・プロジェクトGlobal Voicesからの例をあげ、翻訳とソーシャルメディアは同然な組み合わせであり、特定のコンテンツでの、新しい言語オーディエンス獲得においてコミュニティー翻訳が鍵を握っているということについて説明する。
